Mining Bees

I found large numbers of mining bees digging near the Susquehanna River and found this info on University of Rhode Island’s website. Solitary bees! Who would have guessed that not every bee is part of a hive.

Mining bees, or digger bees, (familys Andrenidae & Anthophoridae) nest in burrows in the ground. Unlike the honey bee, mining bees are “solitary” bees. They do not form long-lived colonies, nor do they live inside a single, well-defended nest controlled by one queen bee. Instead, each mining bee female usually digs her own individual burrow to rear her own young. Large numbers of these bees may nest near one another if soil conditions are suitable.

Blue Heron

I see this blue heron at the Susquehanna River all the time. Here it is flying through the sky in silhouette. A different sort of photo from me!

Orange Sludge

Orange sludge found while walking the river’s edge not more than a mile into the woods near the park. The photos are close up shots of pipe flow into the Susquehanna River. The rest of the soil looks fine but there is a trail of orange sludge coming out of a pipe from farmland and into the river. Not sure I want to know what it is. Guesses?

Susquehanna River Soil

Here is the soil in spring when the water level is rising and falling a lot. The cracked earth is so pretty and the small flowers make a nice addition.

Vine with Orange Flowers

Here is a vine from the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. It was very long and I could only see about 9 feet of it. I tried to follow it but the rest of the brush was too thick. The flower was almost the size of my hand.

Plants and Insects from the Susquehanna River

A sampling of plant and insect species found at the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Notice the insect that blends in perfectly in the fourth shot down. It is a messy picture but the bug just blends perfectly so I had to post it.

The little beetle at the bottom is a Spotted Cucumber Beetle. The plant the beetle is on is called a rose mallow seedpod. lots of those in the gallery.
